![]() Interfaith Prayers for Peace in Tibet Held in New York City “I am deeply hurt by Chinese Brutality to our Tibetan Brothers & Sisters” - Richard Gere, Hollywood actor Weeping as they remember innocent Tibetans who were tortured and killed in Tibet by Chinese government. New York, April 6, 2008-Hundreds of Tibetans and religious leaders from Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, and Muslim faiths gathered at the Church of St. Paul & St. Andrew in Manhattan, New York and offered their prayers for innocent Tibetans who were killed and for those who continue to suffer from recent Chinese Government’s brutal oppression in Tibet. Richard Gere, Hollywood actor, says he first encountered Tibetan people 30 years ago while visiting Nepal. His Gere Foundation contributes directly to The Tibet Fund, giving support to His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan community-in-exile. According to the Tibet Fund, “Since March 10, it is estimated that Chinese Security forces have killed at least 140 Tibetans. House-to-house searches are now being conducted and over 1200 Tibetans have been arrested. The situation in Tibet remains tense with the presence of thousands of Chinese armed forces.” The evening ended with a peaceful call to action against the Chinese Government's severe response to recent demonstrations in Tibet and throughout the world. The Prayers for Peace in Tibet was co-sponsored by the Church of St. Paul & St. Andrew, Congregation of B'nai Jeshurun, Jewel Heart, The Interfaith Center of New York, The Temple of Understanding, Buddhist Council of New York, The Gere Foundation, New York Open Center and the Tibet Fund. -Pradeep Thapa Magar.
