RUBIN MUSEUM OF ART
Presents the exclusive appearance in New York City of Manose
Friday, October 10
7:00 p.m.
A concert of Hindustani classical and Himalayan folk music
$18 in advance/ $20 day of
Manose's hometown, Boudha, Nepal, stands on the ancient route leading
from the Himalayan Mountains down into the Kathmandu valley. A nexus
where everyone from religious pilgrims, to enclaves of traders, to
Western adventurers converged to meet, mingle, haggle, and gawk, this
dusty and colorful area inspires Manose’s musical style and subtle
expressiveness.
Manose’s four solo albums and collaborations—with artists including Deva
Premal, Grammy-nominated Jai Uttal, and bluegrass great Peter Rowan—have
earned him a reputation as Nepal’s musical ambassador to the world. He
continues to re-popularize the traditional flute in his country, where
he was the first to introduce it as a rock instrument.

Art of the Kathmandu Valley
Through March 16, 2009
Located between India and Tibet, the Kathmandu Valley represents the
heart of the political, religious, and cultural entity now known as
Nepal. Kathmandu’s unique position has fostered a tremendous amount of
cultural exchange, establishing a living creative tradition that is one
of the single most important influences in the history of Himalayan art.
The exhibition displays the finest examples of Nepalese art from the RMA
collection, highlighting the variety of forms, subjects, techniques, and
media that have emerged from the valley’s creative matrix.

PRESIDENT INLS, NEW YORK CHAPTER
NEPAL EXHIBITION EXTENDED!!!
Hello and Namaste!
I am happy to announce that the Rubin Museum of Art's current Nepal
exhibition, From the Land of the Gods: Art of the Kathmandu Valley, has
officially been extended throughout the winter until March 2009!!! This
is a 5-month extension from the show's original closing date in October!
What this means, of course, is that we now have plenty of new
opportunities for Nepal RPCV "PeaceTalks"! This has been a very engaging
series of talks in which Nepal RPCVs use the artwork in the exhibition
as a means of accessing memories of the places and people that changed
their lives.
It has been incredibly well-received by both the audiences
and the participating speakers! The next PeaceTalk will be at 7pm on
Friday, July 18th. But now it is time to look ahead!
If you are a Nepal RPCV, please consider sharing stories about some of
your experiences! It is a great way to reconnect with them! Here is an
offering of some Friday evenings which are possible dates for NEPAL RPCV
"PeaceTalks"-
September 12, 19, 26
October 17, 24, 31
November 7, 14
December 5, 12
Please note these are all Friday evenings and will be a part of the
RMA's Friday night K2 Lounge programming. I do hope some of you will
participate and please spread the word to other Nepal RPCVs in your
networks and communities! Thank you all so much! There will also be some
additional dates available early next year in January and February, but
who can think that far in advance?! Anyway, I look forward to seeing
many of you on Friday, July 18th (if not sooner!)!
All my best,
Adam

Appeal to contribute to help flood
victims in Nepal
Dear friends,
The Nepalese Americas Council (NAC) and North American Coordination
Council (NACC) appeal all Nepali American and Canadian organizations,
members of North American Nepali Diaspora and friends of Nepal to
contribute funds to support relief efforts for the people affected by
the recent flooding southern Nepal. Last year too we did our part to
support the relief work. Nature has struck again and thousand have been
affected, who need help.
As in the past, our contributions can make a difference in the lives of
those who have suffered from this natural calamity. You have readily
responded to such calls in the past and we hope you will do it again.
Your contributions are tax deductible. Please make checks payable to
Nepalese Americas Council (please write Nepal Flood Victims' on the memo
section of the check) and urgently mail your contributions to the
following address:
Ms. Bishnu Thapa, Treasurer
The Nepalese Americas Council
4 Travis Ct., Gaithersburg, MD 20879
This is a collaborative effort on behalf of the Nepali community and
friends of Nepal. The collected amount will be handed over to a reliable
and reputable relief agency in Nepal. On behalf of NAC, its member
organizations and NACC we thank you in advance for your generous
support.
Sincerely,
Dr. Ambika Adhikari

Nepali Youth program at Rubin
Museum of (Himalayan)Art
Saathi haru, hello and Namaste!
I was very happy to see some of you at the Rubin Museum of (Himalayan)
Art community meeting held last month. As many of you know, in March,
the museum will open its first-ever exhibition solely dedicated to the
incredible art of Nepal! The title of the exhibition is From the Land of
the Gods: Art of the Kathmandu Valley. So, what better time than now to
form a strong, lasting partnership between the RMA and the Nepali
community of the New York City area?
In particular, I have in mind a program for the local Nepali youth that
will be modeled after a program that was active last year for the
Tibetan youth community of Queens. The structure of the program was that
a group of young Tibetans (usually approximately 10-18 children between
the ages of 6-14 or so) would visit the museum every other Saturday
morning. They would come with a number of parents/adult chaperones. For
approximately one hour, they would be given a very interactive,
multilingual tour. The children, along
with the adults and the tour guides, would explore, examine, and
discover the art together discussing the paintings and sculptures on
many levels.
Following the tour, the children would be brought down to the studio
classroom where they would engage in an art-making activity related to
what they saw in the galleries. It was a very enjoyable program that was
extremely well-received by both the museum and the Tibetan community. It
is my goal to share this same kind of experience with members of the NYC
area Nepali community!
Based on my personal experiences in Nepal, and the deep love I have
developed for the country and the many cultures there, it would be my
honor to facilitate and lead this program. I would plan to conduct the
tours in both English and Nepali to make the experience more accessible,
interesting, and rewarding. And after having taught for more than two
years at a government school in a Magar village in Palpa, working with
Nepali children is a great source of enjoyment for me! I am also an
artist and am currently working on my Master's degree in Art Education
at Teachers College, Columbia University. So, I am happy to spearhead
this project in all of its capacities. I do of course, however, need the
help and support of influential leaders in the local Nepali community to
make this happen! Without your assistance in organizing the local
communities, this program cannot succeed.
Please write back to let me know of your interest in pursuing this
exciting program for the local Nepali community, for haamra aphnai bhai
bahini haru! As the Nepal Exhibition is scheduled to open in only 3
months, the sooner we start to organize this, the better and smoother it
will run! I have already been in contact with Mohan dai, President of
the Ridgewood Society, regarding this program and we are hoping to work
together to make it happen. The program, however, is of course open to
all Nepalis living in the NYC
area and it is essential that we have point-people in the communities
that will lead and organize.
La ta, saathi haru, email ekdam laamo bhayeko maa, malai maaph garidinus
please. I am very excited about this possibility and am looking forward
to seeing it evolve! Please be in touch when you have a moment. Thank
you so much- and enjoy your weekend!
