Nepalese Indigenous in New York Celebrated World Indigenous Day

New York, August 9, 2008- The Federation of Indigenous Peoples of Nepal in America (FIPNA), the umbrella organization of Nepalese indigenous communities, organized the program to mark the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples in its Head Office, Elmhurst, New York.

The program began with General Secretary of FIPNA, Arjun Gurung reading out the press release of the federation. General Secretary Gurung requested all the participants to send out the details of International Labor Organization (ILO) Convention 169 and United Nation Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) to all Janajatis (Indigenous Peoples) by e-mail or talk to them about it whenever possible as a part of campaigning to educate our brothers and sisters one way or other. He also proposed to start working on preparation of next year’s grand celebration of the World’s Indigenous Day by forming the preparation committee in advance time.

Karma G. Sherpa, President of FIPNA said that Janajatis can not trust Nepalese political leaders as they always betray Nepalese indigenous peoples by giving them false hope and not including in any state and party mechanism. He warned, “We should be able to revolt and punish these leaders who go against Janajatis in Nepal.”

Speaking at the discussion, Pradeep Thapa Magar, Editor-in-Chief, USNepalOnline.Com and former secretary of NEFIN highlighted the mistakes and irresponsible activities of NEFIN’s past key officials. “We must restructure NEFIN by making special provisions to make hard to NEFIN leaders so that they can’t exploit their position for their ‘interests’ and to be loyal and responsible towards indigenous communities, not for their respective parties. They should not be allowed to carry any political party’s agendas around, during their tenure in the federation.”

He also explained that why major political parties of Nepal are having their own Janajati federation which is undermining, if not, weakening the effective roles of NEFIN.

Dr. Krishna Kumar Rai explained about the features of Janajatis, needs of unity within and requested all to stop the categorization of Janajatis in terms of education or academic background. “This categorization attitude is dividing us,” said Dr. Rai.

Another speaker, Suresh Chamling stressed the need of political party of Janajatis in Nepal to achieve the maximum rights of Janajatis. He gave the example of so-called elites having radio station and we janajatis are just the listeners for hundreds of years. “If we would like to tune the radio our way, we should run the show,” said Chamling. He also didn’t forget to mention that how some of the Janajati leaders became the Royalist and failed to carry the stipulated agendas. He warned all the Janjati leaders to learn from the past and not to repeat the same mistakes.

Tek Gurung, President of United Nepalese Democratic Forum (UNDF), New York Chapter offered his suggestion to take the survey among the Janajatis whether they are ready to have their own political party in the country. “Any miscalculation can be disastrous”, said Gurung.

Lila Rai, Lab K Budha Magar, Kesavram Rai, Binod Pomo Limbu, Nabin Rai also spoke. The program was chaired by Karma G. Sherpa, President of the Federation of Indigenous Peoples of Nepal in America (FIPNA).
