Kathmandu, August 9, 2008- Indigenous Peoples of Nepal celebrated the 14th World Indigenous Day on August 9 in the capital with great fanfare and joviality.

Ethnic groups dressed in their traditional attire seemed very excited and overjoyed to have different indigenous communities uniting as one group.

An enthusiastic indigenous pride organized a cultural rally from Khula Manch, Tudhikhel that went through Ratnapark, Bagbazar, Putalishadak, Sahidget, Sundhara and concluded at Dasrath Stadium, Tripureshwor, the venue of the main celebration event.

They demanded the guarantee of the Right to self determination with cultural autonomy, right to natural resources and implementation of International Labour Organization (ILO) 169 Convention.

The different ethnic nations engulfed Dasrath Stadium with an extravagant flair. They were in their most jubilant mood and their opulent heritage was energetically displayed.

Almost every ethnic community of Nepal- Tamang, Gurung, Limbu, Magar, Sherpa, Newar, Lohurung, Rai, Thakali, Majhi, Tharu, Dhimal, Kumal, Sunuwar, Rajbanshi, Yholmo, Jhagad, Tokpegola and endangered indigenous groups such as Hayu, Lepcha and others were there to rejoice their unique identities.

The event was a vibrant celebration and an emotional common ground for all indigenous and marginalized, highly marginalized and endangered communities of Nepal.

The event was filled with a variety of cultural shows, ethnic dances, songs and food festivals.

Different ethnic groups performed their wonderful dances and served their flavorsome dishes along with displays of their distinct attires and jewelry.
