The Saga of Limbu Survival: When a Kipat Is Lost... by Samngmo Yonjan-Tamang काठमाडौं, January 25, 2008 -There is a beautiful Limbu village where people of the Limbu community follow their own culture, tradition and customs. Landlords known as Subba, having high social prestige and authority, have all the powers to formulate or break the rules. People from poor financial background have to cultivate crops on the landlord’s land just to fulfill their basic needs. The subba collects the tax from his subjects and decides minor disputes. Simple and honest Limbus enjoy their lifestyle as there is no one to interfere and disturb their living situation. ![]() A Limbu couple's scene from Chesung But, suddenly everything goes wrong when the ruling government enacted the Land Reform Act (bhumi sudhar ain) to abolish their Kipat system. The result was big problems in the socio-economic aspects of the Limbu community. The Limbu protested the government’s decision but their efforts were in vain. You might be wondering what this is all about. Well, it is a story of a film Chesung, ‘a gift’, based on the cultural and historical values of the Limbu nation which was screened at the Nepal Tourism Board(NTB) on Friday, January 25. Directed by Mausam Imbung and produced by Yug Kumari Limbu, Surya Kerung, Bimala Bokhim, Bhim Angbum, Sashi Chemjong, Pramila Meyangbo and Nangjong Hangshrong , Chesung exposes the reality how the Limbu nation had been displaced from the ownership of their ancestral land during king Mahendra’s regime. It highlights the Limbu cultural practices of displaying the sequences of marriage ceremony, funeral rite and Dhan naach (cultural dance) in an interesting way. It also reflects the deteriorating condition of Limbu families who were compelled to leave their ancestral homeland after the announcement by the ruling government to enact Land Reform Act in the year 2021B.S. abolishing their Kipat system. It showed how the rich and the poor inevitable encountered misunderstandings, how landlords threatened tenants to pay debts in time and how tenants raised their voices against the landlords. It reminded the audience how the late king Mahendra demolished their cultural and traditional identities. It encourages them to now fight for their inherent rights. ![]() Depicting the history of Limbuwan, Chesung tries to persuade all the indigenous nationalities, non- indigenous people and young generation of the Limbu community to understand Limbuwan’s history and culture and to pay tribute to their ancestors who fought for their rights. “While practices have been made for the federal republic”, young director Mausam Imbung says “the theme of the film is also to establish a federal state structure based on the Limbus’ cultural autonomy.” The main actors in the film are Prem Subba, Shova Khajum, Balraj Jabegu, Bhishma Chemjong, Ashish Lingden, Ramesh Singhak, Bishnu Chemjung, Pushpa Shrestha and Sabitra Ingnam. The story by Bhishma Chemjong is followed by Bikram Subba’s song and Ashok Rai’s music. Chesung is the presentation of Kirat Yakthung Mangenna Chumlung. |
