'Nepali (Khas) language is killing more than 150 Indigenous languages of Nepal' - Dr. David Hough

काठमाडौं, February 21, 2008 -With the aim to raise awareness of the preservation and promotion of mother languages, the 9th International Mother Language Day was marked on Thursday February 21. UNESCO declared International Mother Language Day on Feb 19, 1999 and Nepal has celebrated this special day since 2000.
The Chulachuli UNESCO Club organized a program at Gurukul, Old Baneshor on Thursday. Indigenous people from Humla district of Karnali region recited the National Anthem composed by Byakul Maila in their Limi and Nimba language and the National Anthem was recited in Kulung, Nachering, Bahing, Lohorung, Chamling and Tamang languages.

Chief Technical Adviser (CTA) of Multilingual Education Program Dr. David Hough presented his paper: “Mother Language and Community’s Identity relevant to Linguistic Human Rights”. It is his opinion that a child deprived of education in her mother tongue suffers Linguistic Genocide. “The Nepali (Khas) language is killing the more than 150 indigenous languages of Nepal as it has dominated them for decades.” He emphasized the importance of Mother tongue Education and Linguistic Human Rights.

The program included a showing of “Kripa”, a Gurung film directed Mautse Gurung that promotes the preservation of the mother tongue.
Commenting on the film, social activist Dr. Chunda Bajracharya said “the film is successful in depicting oppression of women and other issues of the society as well as the culture of Gurung community” adding “Mother tongue film also promotes cultural identity of indigenous peoples.”

Linguist Amrit Yonjan-Tamang stressed the value in depicting both negative and positive aspects of society in creating film. He called mother tongue the “vehicle of cultural identity” and pointed to the roles of shamans as “free health workers” throughout the history of indigenous communities.

Meanwhile, National Federation of UNESCO Association of Nepal and Russian Centre of Science and Culture organized an interactive program titled “The role of Government and NGO’s for Developing Ethnic Groups and Languages” to mark the International Mother Language Day at Russian Culture Centre.

Speakers stressed the need to end the ‘one nation one language’ policy of past government which resulted in the loss and endangerment of many cultures and languages of the nation’s indigenous communities.

Mr Nabin Chitrakar recommended that the government give equal importance to each language spoken by indigenous peoples. Dr. Chunda Bajracharya demanded the establishment of a clear language preservation policy by the government.

Mr Chandra Sing Kulung, president of Chulachuli UNESCO Club stressed the need for proportional participation of all indigenous peoples, along with their linguistic identities, in the Constitution Assembly (CA) Poll.

Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Furmullha Mangsur said CA Election is necessary in order to ensure permanency of democracy and cultural rights as guaranteed by the interim constitution.

Nepal, renowned as a multi-lingual and multi-cultural nation, has suffered greatly during the 239 years that have led to the loss and endangerment of many of its indigenous languages.
