Gurkhas: Not Tired and Not Out!
न्यूयोर्क, New York, UK, March 20, 2008-Many UK Gurkhas and their families rallied in front of the British Parliament on March 19, 2008. They were there to remind Parliament of its continuing unequal treatment of Gurkhas.

The same day, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), third largest party in the UK after Labour and Conservative, tabled a motion for equal status with British counterparts. Of 665 parliamentarians, LDP has 57. From the beginning, LDP has taken initiative on the Gurkha issue.

Two Gurkha organizations in the UK, the GAESO (Gurkha Army Ex-Soldier's Organization) and BGWS (British Gurkha Welfare Society) were actively campaigning. The GAESO have 52 branches in Nepal and 13 abroad. Hon. Lt. Tulbahadur Pun Magar, a Victoria Cross-winner Gurkha veteran entered the UK with the help of this organization. BGWS is established in the UK and is a strong organization there. All ex-Gurkha organizations joined in this campaign.

At present, there are Gurkha immigration cases in the British Tribunal Court whose hearings will start on 15, 16 and 17 April, 2008. These cases have been lodged by Howe & Co, a London firm of solicitors. Many believe that in the immigration cases now pending in the British court, the MoD (Ministry of Defense), a defendant, might lose. Therefore, before the court verdict, the MoD may grant in favour of Ex-Gurkhas.

Prince Harry's deployment in Afghanistan with the 1st Royal Gurkha Rifles, may have positive effect on the hearings. Time will tell how the Gurkhas will be treated.
