Government Underwrites Training for Indigenous Film Makers
Kathmandu, January 8, 2008- A workshop on film making for the indigenous film maker
was conducted with a screening of five short films with different themes, made during the workshop by the participants.

A workshop on film making for the indigenous film maker was conducted at Nagarkot hills from December 19 – 23, 2007 by the Indigenous Film Archive (IFA) with the support of the Embassy of Denmark. It concluded with a screening of five short films with different themes, made during the workshop by the participants.
The closing ceremony was held at the Nepal Tourism Board on Tuesday. The chief guest for the programme was Finn Thilsted, Ambassador of Denmark and the chairperson was Nabin Subba, President of IFA.Various indigenous personalities suggested using the medium of film to reflect the culture and tradition of indigenous people in a clear manner.
The sub- president of the National Foundation for Development of Indigenous Nationalities (NFDIN), Jit Pal Kirat said the voice of the indigenous people has not been fully heard due to the limited access of indigenous people to the media. “Though we are rich in culture, language and tradition there is no access to mainstream media so many positive things have been left behind. If film, as well as the print and electronic media would showcase the positive stories of indigenous people we would achieve international exposure.”

Sociologist Dr. Krishna Bahadur Bhattachan blamed the unitary state system of 240 years for the domination of indigenous people. He appreciated the movement that has been taken for cultural autonomy and right for self determination stating it would help to make the dream of the indigenous people come true. “The issues on cultural autonomy and right for self determination should be shown through film”.
He stressed the need for equality between indigenous films and non indigenous films.
President of Federation of Indigenous Nationality (NEFIN), Pasang Sherpa suggested showing existing harmonious relationship between different indigenous people through films.
President of IFA Nabin Subba thanked the Denmark Embassy for its support. He emphasized the importance of greater participation by women in future film workshops.
The Danish Ambassador encouraged those present to make films about Janajatis issues, adding that Nepal is rich in cultural diversity and Nepalis should be proud of it. “Though we are different, we share common values”, the envoy concluded.
The 31 participants learned a lot about different aspects of film making. For example, they learned about editing, script writing, acting and cinematography. After the training, the participants were divided into five groups and given a week and a budget of Rs5000 in which to complete shooting their films. The short films One Fine Saturday, Fallen Flowers , The Stranger, Reflection, and Level were shown on the final day, followed by the distribution of certificates by the Danish Envoy.
