Photo courtesy: wsj.net New York, September 4, 2008- A war hero and a 'maverick' as many call him, Senator John McCain, the Republican Party's Presidential candidate, now has another war to fight, but this time the war zone is on the election battle field, against Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama. Today, McCain delivered his fighting-spirited speech before thousands of cheering Republican delegates and party supporters at Xcel Energy Center, St. Paul, Minneapolis. The 72 year old, one time fighter jet pilot and prisoner of war (POW), McCain said, "I’m going to fight for my cause every day as your President. I’m going to fight to make sure every American has every reason to thank God, as I thank Him: that I’m an American, a proud citizen of the greatest country on earth, and with hard work, strong faith and a little courage, great things are always within our reach. Fight with me. Fight with me. Fight for what’s right for our country. Fight for the ideals and character of a free people. |

Fight for our children’s future. Fight for justice and opportunity for all. Stand up to defend our country from its enemies. Stand up for each other; for beautiful, blessed, bountiful America. Stand up, stand up, stand up and fight. Nothing is inevitable here. We’re Americans, and we never give up. We never quit. We never hide from history. We make history." (Read his full speech) Some say he is too old to lead the country but today, his still healthy looking 96 year old mother, Roberta McCain was there to cheer him on. If he wins, he will be the oldest President of the United States at the age of 73. ![]() John McCain, his mother Roberta (center) and wife Cindy McCain. Photo courtesy: Newsweek.com He praised his mother's dedication, strength and her character saying, " When I was growing up, my father was often at sea, and the job of raising my brother, sister and me would fall to my mother alone. Roberta McCain gave us her love of life, her deep interest in the world, her strength, and her belief we are all meant to use our opportunities to make ourselves useful to our country. I wouldn’t be here tonight but for the strength of her character." Then he jokingly said, "She doesn't want me to say but she is 96 years young." Two months from today, on November 4th, there will be the battle for the Presidency. Who will win- a Maverick and battle tested McCain or Obama, a young black American (half white because his mother was a white) Obama, whom many consider an agent of change in Washington? -Pradeep Thapa Magar in New York.
