Beijing Olympic 2008: Facts That You Need to Know

When is Beijing Olympic Games?
The 2008 Summer Olympic Games is being held in Beijing, China from August 8 to August 24, 2008.

How many games are included in the Beijing Olympics ?
The 2008 Beijing Olympic will have 30 sports, and will hold 302 events including 165 men’s events, 127 women’s events, and 10 mixed events.

How many participants are competing?
There will be more than 10,500 athletes representing 205 National Olympic Committees from around the world who will compete in 302 events in 30 sports which include Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Baseball, Basketball, Boxing, Canoeing, Cycling, Diving, Equestrian, Fencing, Field Hockey, Football (Soccer), Gymnastics and Trampoline Gymnastics, Handball, Judo, Modern Pentathlon, Rowing, Sailing, Shooting, Softball, Swimming, Synchronized swimming, Table tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Triathlon, Volleyball, Water polo, Weightlifting and Wrestling.

China, the host country has the largest number of athletes with 639 followed by United States of America (USA) 596, Russia 467, Germany 439 and Australia 433.

The two jumbo countries in terms of population and area, India is sending only 57 athletes while Brazil is sending 277 athletes.

Nepal, the country known for the brave Gurkhas on the battlefield, is sending only 8 athletes to compete with only 2 to 4 months of prior training for the Games while the small island country of Singapore (692.7 sq km), 202 times smaller than Nepal (140, 000 sq km), is sending 25 athletes.

Not so easy to host the Olympics
There are total of 37 stadiums including 12 newly constructed venues for the event.

Beijing was elected as the host city on July 13, 2001, during the 112th IOC Session in Moscow, beating competing cities Toronto (Canada), Paris (France), Istanbul (Turkey), and Osaka (Japan).

The Opening Ceremony
According to the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad, the Games will be officially opened in the Beijing National Stadium at 8:08:08 pm CST on 8 August 2008.

There will be a cast of more than 15,000 performing the opening ceremony.

The Security Measures
The Chinese government will mobilize 110,000 police, riot squads and special forces and there will be more than 300,000 Olympic volunteers and neighborhood watch members.

The Olympic History
Pierre Frédy Coubertin of France founded the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in a ceremony held at the University of Sorbonne in Paris on 23 June, 1894. Demetrius Vikelas from Greece became the first president of the IOC. The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece in 1896.
