America's prominent TV journalist Tim
Russert, 58, the host of NBC TV's "Meet the Press" which is the
most-watched Sunday-morning interview show in the United States, died on
Friday, 13 June, 2008.According to NBC, he had a massive heart attack and collapsed at work. He was immediately taken to Washington's Sibley Memorial Hospital, where he died. Russert had just returned from a family vacation in Italy with his wife, a Vanity Fair Magazine journalist Maureen Orth, and son, Luke, to celebrate Luke's graduation program at Boston College. Bush said "He was an institution in both news and politics for more than two decades. Tim was a tough and hardworking newsman. He was always well-informed and thorough in his interviews. And he was as gregarious off the set as he was prepared on it." In 2008, TIME magazine named him one of "The 100 Most Influential People in The World" under "Artists & Entertainers" category. The former New York State Governor Mario Cuomo wrote on that May 12, 2008 issue of the magazine, "Every Sunday, more than 4 million Americans tune in to Meet the Press seeking help in trying to understand the issues... They choose that program because Tim Russert is among the most astute, discerning and relentless pursuers of truth in the nation, and has been for many years." The Gov. Cuomo noted that "Tim never forgets where he comes from. He never lets us forget either, and we love it!" Russert
was born on May 7, 1950, in Buffalo, New York. His parents were Timothy
John Russert Sr. (Big Russ), a newspaper truck driver and sanitation
worker, and Elizabeth Russert.Russert joined NBC in 1984 and was senior vice president and Washington bureau chief of NBC news at the time of his death. Before joining NBC, Russert served as press secretary for former New York State Governor Mario Cuomo and as chief of staff to Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan. He was a graduate of Canisius High School, John Carroll University and the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law and was a member of the bar in New York and the District of Columbia. According to MSNBC, he has received forty-eight honorary doctorate degrees from American colleges and universities and has lectured at the Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Reagan Presidential Libraries. Russert had won many awards in his 17 years of TV journalism. According to MSNBC, he was awarded an Emmy for his role in the coverage of the funeral of President Reagan in 2005. He is the recipient of the Golden Plate Award of the Academy of Achievement. His Election 2000 Meet the Press interviews with George W. Bush and Al Gore won the Radio and Television Correspondents’ highest honor, the Joan S. Barone Award and the Annenberg Center’s Walter Cronkite Award. Russert’s March 2000 interview with Senator John McCain shared the 2001 Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence in Television Journalism. He is also the recipient of the John Peter Zenger Award, the American Legion Journalism Award, the Veterans of Foreign Wars News Media Award, the Congressional Medal of Honor Society Journalism Award, the Allen H. Neuharth Award for Excellence in Journalism, the David Brinkley Award for Excellence in Communication, the Catholic Academy for Communication’s Gabriel Award, and was inducted into the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame. He is the author of the two New York Times best selling memoirs books, "Big Russ and Me" (2004) and "Wisdom of Our Fathers" (2006).
