500 Tibetan Protesters arrested in Nepal ![]() Tibetan nuns were taken away from the protest venue by Nepalese police. Photo: Santa Gaha Magar काठमाडौं, New York, March 25, 2008-Nepal police arrested more than 500 non-violent Tibetan demonstrators yesterday in Kathmandu. This is the highest number of arrests in a single day, in this country where the people are just beginning to enjoy freedom as a new republic. The police arrested 200 from Maitighar Mandala, Kathmandu and approx 300 from Pulchok, Lalitpur location of the United Nations Nepal Headquarters. Tibetans have been staging demonstrations in front of the UN office in Pulchok, Kathmandu since March 10, 2008 to show solidarity with the people in Tibet who have been brutally tortured and killed by Chinese government. This marks the 49th Tibetan National Uprising Day against the illegal Chinese occupation when, in 1959, HH the Dalai Lama and hundreds of thousands of Tibetans were forced to flee into exile. ![]() Tibetans demonstrating in front of the UN Headquarters in New York expressed their resentment of the brutality of the Nepal government believing it to be an appeasement of the Chinese government. The Nepal government’s policy is ’One China’ and the main political parties ( Nepali Congress, Communist party of Nepal United Marksist-Leninist (UML) and Communist party of Nepal-Maoist) all support as legitimate the Chinese occupation in Tibet By contrast, the Nepal government and these parties have agreed to the establishment of several federal autonomous states within Nepal according to demands of Nepalese regional and ethnic peoples. Tibetans are seeking autonomy or even an independant state from the Chinese rulers. -Pratha Magar in New York.
