News in 17 Ethnic Languages 15th Tamang Language Transmission Day Celebrated ![]() Guests at the event. Photos: Sangmo Kathmandu, August 17, 2008- Tamang Media Personnel and Intellectuals have stressed the need for quality Tamang radio programs transmission for the promotion and preservation of Tamang language and culture. Speaking at an interaction program organized by Nepal Tamang National Federation (NTNF) to mark the 15th Tamang Language Transmission Day on Sunday in the capital, they urged use of appropriate terms, recognizing regional variations of Tamang language for the effective flow of information to the audience. Chief Guest of the program, Tamang linguist Amrit Yonjan-Tamang emphasized the need for a 'Tamang media style book' for the proper use of Tamang terms in media as 'RSS (Rastriya Samachar Saminty) Style Book' and 'Radio Nepal Style Book'. "Tamang media style book is essential to standardize media terms and develop its presentation style." "More importantly, it is especially useful to develop media technical terms in Tamang language and to promote it in a unified manner" said Tamang linguist Yonjan-Tamang. He further said to implement the provision of Interim Constitution of Nepal 2063' regarding the use of Tamang Language in basic education and local government bodies and offices. "However, this right has not been used by anybody yet." he added. |

"Radio programs in Tamang language have more or less helped in conserving the language and culture of Tamang community" said radio media person Pratik Nyasur- Tamang, adding, " if radio transmission in Tamang language had been made earlier in 1951 A.D when radio transmission was first started, then certainly Tamang peoples would have been aware and empowered." He emphasized producing effective Tamang radio programs to make long lasting impact on the people. Man Tshering Tamang suggested co-ordinating regional variations of Tamang languages so as to disseminate information in a proper way. Dhayan Bahadur Moktan, Sirjana Gole, Folk Artist Chandra Kumar Dong, Tamang poet Indra Ram Moktan, Ganesh Lama and Urmila Tamang also expressed their views at the function. General Secretary of NTNF, Shyam Tamang who chaired the function, gave his vote of thanks. At present, 19 Tamang programs including news, are being broadcast in the country through different radio stations of Nepal. For the first time in the history of Radio Nepal, the first radio station of Nepal, news in 8 ethnic languages was transmitted on 2051 B.S, Bhadra 1, (1994 A.D). They were Limbu, Bantawa Rai, Eastern Tharu, Tamang, Bhojpuri, Magar, Gurung and Western Tharu languages. The transmission in these languages was made possible only after the restoration of democracy in Nepal in 1990 A.D. Amrit Yonjan- Tamang, Dhayan Bahadur Moktan and Ms. Ramita Bal are the first Tamang news anchors and news editors.
