Fat Woman on The Mountain:
She loves Nepal and would like to climb Himalayas!

"It's a wonderful dream to go to Nepal and climb the beautiful mountains."
-
Kara Richardson Whitely

Fat Woman on the Mountain.Com owner and climber Kara Richardson Whitely met with Editor-in-Chief Pradeep Thapa this weekend at NewNepal.Org benefit sale of Nepalese and Indian handicrafts in Jersey City, NJ. Kara  lost more than 120 pounds since 2004 when she weighed 360 pounds.

Currently, she is busy writing a book
"Fat Woman on the Mountain: How I Lost Half of Myself and Gained Happiness". She was too fat to climb but her adventurous spirit gave her the motivation to achieve this extraordinary goal. "If there is a will, everything is possible, but you have to believe in yourself to accomplish your dream" Kara says with confidence. "Sometimes, it's very hard when you are obese to take those first steps; you feel really stuck. You need to keep going."

Kara loves climbing regardless of her weight and expressed her desire to visit Nepal.
"It's a wonderful dream to go to Nepal and climb the beautiful mountains." Welcome Kara, we are behind you and Nepal, in all its natural beauty, is waiting to enfold you in her arms.

One Million Immigrants Found Help at IINJ

Jersey City, NJ, December 13, 2007-
The International Institute of New Jersey (IINJ) a non-profit organization, under the umbrella of the United States Committee for Refugees and Immigrants, which helps immigrants and refugees integrate into communities in New Jersey held its annual meeting at the Jersey City Museum. Over the past 90 years, the institute has helped nearly one million people.

Each year the IINJ holds an Annual Meeting which highlights the people they serve and the comprehensive approach they use in working with immigrants.  This year IINJ asked three Chadians who arrived as refugees two years ago – alone and frightened-to speak in English about their experiences.

In her welcome address, Catherine Tansey, Executive Director, IINJ said-

Can you imagine stepping off a plane into a new location?  You have lived all your life with your family in a warm sunny climate where the temperature averages 82 degrees or higher.    You have left your family and your friends behind.   You arrive only with the clothes on your back.    You are fleeing a terrifying or dangerous situation at home and you are running into the unknown, not knowing exactly what will happen to you.  You cannot communicate with your friends or family because you don’t know where they are now or, because they may suffer reprisals if you try to communicate with them.” पुरा खबर पढ्‍नुहोस‌ Read full news»

UN Climate Change Conference 2007, Bali, Indonesia

CLIMATE CHANGE: The Bali Forecast - Low Expectations

NUSA DUA, Indonesia, Dec 11 (IPS/IFEJ) - The multitudinous United Nations Conference on Climate Change under way since Dec. 3 on the tropical Indonesian island of Bali has oscillated between optimism and quiet reserve.

The 12-day event is a thermometer of the success or failure of a strategic anti-global warming treaty that should emerge in two years. But the forecast is confidential.

The four issues at the core of the talks are the mitigation of climate change, adaptation to the changes caused by rising temperatures, technology transfer from the rich countries to poor, and incentives to fight against deforestation.

There are 25 million "climate refugees" in the world who are not recognised by an international law that only protects those who are fleeing war or political, religious or ethnic persecution, according to Bodil Ceballos, parliamentarian from Sweden's Green Party.

Let’s celebrate! The United Nations Adopts Declaration on Rights of Indigenous Peoples

September 13, 2007 became a momentous day of glory for the world’s Indigenous Peoples. It was the day when the United Nations General Assembly finally adopted a landmark declaration outlining the rights of the world’s estimated remaining 370 million Indigenous Peoples and outlawing all kinds of discrimination against them–a move that followed more than two decades of debate in the UN and centuries of struggle for survival by Indigenous Peoples around the world. We thank the UN, UPFII, its body on Indigenous Peoples, and the countries who voted in favour of the declaration.
