The International Day for Monuments and Sites was started on 18th April, 1982, by ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites) and later approved at the 22nd UNESCO General Conference in 1983.
UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) listed 851 World Heritage Sites which include 660 cultural , 166 natural and 25 mixed properties in 141 States Parties.
The four UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Nepal, and their dates of inscription, are Kathmandu Valley (1979, 2006), Sagarmatha National Park (1979), Royal Chitwan National Park (1984) and Lumbini, the Birthplace of the Lord Buddha (1997) . (04/18/2008).
