New York, June 20, 2008- There are about 40 million "unfortunate" people around the world who are displaced from their homes and their countries of origin. These people are refugees.

This is one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century. We have already entered the digital world and yet our fellow human beings are in need of protection, food and shelter.

UNHCR (The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) Goodwill Ambassador and Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie who has adopted two children, appears in a promotional video to mark the World Refugee Day June 20.

She says in her video message "They've survived war. They've survived displacement. They've survived rape. They've survived hunger and disease. For those who have survived and for those who did not, we're thinking of you this day."

UNHCR was established on December 14, 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly. It is mandated to lead and co-ordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide.

According to UNHCR, the agency has helped an estimated 50 million people restart their lives. Today, it is staffed by more than 6,300 workers in more than 110 countries providing humanitarian assistance to 32.9 million refugees around the world.
