As hundreds of thousands of their brothers, sisters, fathers and mothers, as well as Buddhist monks, were arrested, tortured and killed in Tibet just months before the Beijing Olympics is scheduled for the Chinese capital on August 8th, New York resident Tibetans demonstrated in the streets of New York City. More than 700 protested against the UN’s tight-lipped silence about human rights abuses in Tibet in front of UN Headquarters. 20 protesters were arrested there yesterday when they silently laid down in the street. Today, 300 protested against the brutality in front of the New York Chinese Consulate. NYPD officers made 4 arrests when angry protesters threw a bucket of red enamel paint (view) on the massive wall of the consulate to symbolize the blood that has been shed by their loved ones in Tibet. They shouted “China is the butcher. China is the murderer.” Thupten, a protester (view) showed USNepalOnline an sms from his friend in Tibet stating that the Chinese police have slaughtered more than 1000 (one thousand) civilian Tibetans, including Buddhist monks from the various monasteries throughout Tibet since March 10th. March 10th marks the 49th Tibetan National Uprising Day against the illegal Chinese occupation when, in 1959, HH the Dalai Lama and hundreds of thousands of Tibetans were forced to flee into exile. Upon meeting this Nepali news portal journalist, the organizers strongly protested the Nepal police arrest and torture of non-violent Tibetan demonstrators in Kathmandu in recent days. They asked us to highlight the brutal actions of the Nepal government which they believe is an appeasement of the Chinese government. “No Human Rights, No Olympics” The Tibetan protest will continue, according to the organizers, until the Government of China halts it abuses of all innocent peoples in Tibet. The protest coincides with the time when international attention is focused on China as the host of the Olympic Games and China may be embarrassed if any of the participating countries refuse to take part citing concerns for the human rights abuses. And, we wonder about the rights to self determination as guaranteed by the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples which was ratified by 189 of the 193 member countries, including China. The Tibetans are the indigenous people of Tibet. Please return again as we will continue to cover the news stories of Tibetan protests and highlights of their demands. |
