Tamang Intellectuals Voice for Constitution Assembly

Sangmo Yonjan-Tamang in Kathmandu

January 5, 2008, Kathmandu- Tamang personalities from several organizations have stressed the need for unity among members of all Tamang organizations to achieve proportional representation of Tamangs in the upcoming Constitutional Assembly Polls.

They demand proportional participation of Tamang people in Constitutional Assembly Poll and federal state structure based on population figures; this they believe will solve the core problems of the Tamang community.

Participants at the discussion program.

During a programme entitled 'Maximum Participation of Tamang Community in the Constitutional Assembly', organized by Tamang Academy in Kathmandu, speakers suggested the political parties create a clear vision of their goals.

Tamang Saling Autonomous State Council President, D.K Buddhist Lama, said the demand for Tamang Saling state is for rights to determination and federal state structure.

Nepal Tamang National Federation General Secretary, Shyam Tamang, stressed the need to form a common Tamang front, co-coordinating with Tamang leaders. He criticized Tamang political leaders and parliamentarians for lack of leadership in working for the welfare of Tamang community.

Sitaram Tamang

Similarly, Nepal Communist Party United leader Sita Ram Tamang urged all the Tamang people to protest in the street to press the government into addressing the issues raised by Tamang people. “As we are large in number we wil succeed in our demand for a republic with proportional participation at every level of state” he asserted.

Former Assistant Minister Satyaman Lama claimed that conducting Constitution Assembly polls would be meaningless unless there is full participation of Tamang representatives in the state restructure, and added “Political as well as organizational unity is necessary to ensure seats in the constitution assembly polls”.

Dr. Mukta Singh Lama

Dr. Mukta Singh Lama said the right for self-determination should be guaranteed in the new constitution. He concluded: “Proportional participation on the basis of population is inadequate. Historical compensation is needed as Tamang people have been oppressed by the state for many decades”.

In the programme, academician Yubraj Lama, Sambhu Tamang, Phatteman Tamang, Tsering Moktan, Dhana Lama and others expressed their views about the large participation of Tamang community member in the constitution assembly election.

Dr. Ganesh Bal Tamang

President of Tamang Academy and chairperson of the seminar Dr. Ganesh Bal accepted the views of the speakers and made the commitment to work as guided by them. Tamang Academy was established two years ago with the objective of giving academic support to individuals in different fields of endeavor.

At the beginning of the programme, core member of Tamang Academy and linguist Amrit Yonjan-Tamang presented his paper on 'Seats for Tamangs in the Constitution Assembly' stating that Tamangs are 5.54% in whole national population but yet never won a seat, even by 3%, in the history of National Assembly of Nepal. He presented convincing data for that and claimed 32 seats for Tamangs in Constitution Assembly through proportional electoral system. There are altogether 601 seats allocated in Constitution Assembly by 3rd amendments.
