Jupiter, Venus above crescent moon. Photos: Smita

Kathmandu, December 1, 2008- If any Kathmanduiets missed going to their terrace tonight then they have missed the most exciting celestial treat and now, they will have to wait 3 more years to witness a repeat of this rare drama in the heavens.

However, those who got lucky witnessed the conjunction of Venus and Jupiter in the sky, making a smiling face as they joined with the crescent moon.

This evening between 5 and 7 pm, Venus and Jupiter came close to each other, joined by the crescent moon, to create a fascinating scene in one of the rare heavenly dramas.

A casual sky-gazer saw two bright objects about a hand's width above the horizon, of which the brighter one was Venus and just above Venus, there was Jupiter.

Nepal Academy of Science and Technology had arranged a programme to observe the event at its premises in Khumaltar from 5 to 7 pm this evening. Many astronomers as well as sky-gazers gathered there to be spellbound by the romance between Venus: the Roman Goddess of Love and the Roman God Jupiter, also known as Zeus.

The spectacle of Venus and Jupiter coming close to each other was visible to the naked eye in eastern sky, soon after sunset, from all parts of Nepal.

Astronomers said that the two planets - one brightest (Venus) and another biggest (Jupiter) in the solar system - will just be 2 degrees apart from each other.

They said star-gazers will have to wait until March 2011 for a repeat performance of this spectacular celestial event.

However, the proximity of the two planets will be observable for a week, but not as close as they were on Monday evening.
