Appoint Padma Ratna Tuladhar as the 1st President of Nepal !
The present deadlock preventing from forming a new government shows the might-is-right muscle among thethree big parties. One big issue is who should become the first president of this already proclaimed 'Federal Democratic Republic' without the president. Although a ceremonial president as the head of state has been agreed among the three big parties, a six member panel (Krishna Bahadur Mahara and Khim Lal Devkota from Maoists, Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat and Radheshyam Adhikari from NC and Bhim Rawal and Agni Kharel from UML) of the three parties have been formed to propose a name despite Maoist agreeing to a civil society leader, UML proposing a CA member and NC directly proposing present and many time prime minister Girija Prasad Koirala and Madhesi parties against him.
Long suffering war ended as the peace agreement was signed to hold the CA. The peace talk was negotiated by civil society leaders. Yet, the political parties have ignored the immense role played by the civil society as if only political party leaders alone worked out to bring the present peace in the country. No one should forget that the Second Jana Andolan brought the peace to this impoverished land at the expense of thousands of innocent lives of Nepalese people from different communities. The new government should appoint a civil society leader for the post of 1st President of Nepal. No one also should forget that the new government and the Constituent Assembly meant for only two year term, within which a new constitution need to be written for a New Nepal. Only under a non-political president, a fair, impartial and practical constitution can be expected. A post of president, the head of a state should not be settled only among three political parties. Hence, we The Newah family, the Worldwide Network of Unlimited Newah Professionals (UNPro) along with many like minded Nepalese patriots at home and abroad propose Dr. Padma Ratna Tuladhar as the 1st President of Nepal. Responsible political leaders should give a serious consideration to this proposal while responsible friends from international community should pressurize the Nepal government and concerned parties.
Why Padma Ratna Tuladhar?
Among several civil society leaders, Padma Ratna Tuladhar is the most prominent human right activist. During Panchayat autocratic rule, he joined the anti-panchayat struggle in the late 1970s that culminated in the 1980 referendum, setting in a motion the beginning of the end of autocratic Panchayat rule by calling for multi-party democracy inside the chamber of the Rastriya Panchayat (then, National Assembly) itself, a rare courage someone of his caliber couldn't show. He carried on a relentless campaign for democracy,
and his mass meetings drew unprecedented crowds. In 1986, having got elected to the Rastriya Panchayat with a landslide victory, he astounded the nation by demanding multiparty democracy from the Rastriya Panchayat itself. His public meetings drew awesome crowds. People taped his stirring speeches and sold the cassettes all over the country.
He was instrumental in facilitating peace talks with the Maoists and ending the decade-long bloody conflict. He deserves our gratitude for the end of war and paving for a successful Constituent Assembly giving us the present peace.
Hence, we should appoint a fair-minded, impartial civil leader like Dr. Padma Ratna Tuladhat to write a people-oriented new constitution to guide good governance in Nepal. Failure of appointing Padma Ratna Tuladhar for the 1st President of Nepal will discourage many civic leaders, who have followed Dr. Tuladhar and disappoint his supporters of Nepalese belonging to all communities in Nepal, including the Newah community, who have been patient for all the past 240 years despite, their culture was destroyed, their mother tongue, the Nepal Bhasa was banned in their own native land in addition to its invasion by Shahs and others, who ruled the valley till now.
A new government in Kathmandu, a native land of the Newahs, should return the gratitude, to its son of the soil, who fought together with other Nepalese to get rid of the Shah invaders' rule to free every Nepalese citizen from the grip of the iron-handed-autocracy and its shameful henchmen.
Hence this is the perfect time to appoint Dr. Padma Ratna Tuladhar the 1st President of Nepal!
