Peoples’ Hopes in Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal

-Sangmo Yonjan Tamang in Kathmandu

Kathmandu, June 2, 2008- Maina Tamang, 30, of Dolkha District seems very happy and hopeful about her future. She was excited and overjoyed on 28th May, 2008 , the day when Nepal became a Federal Democratic Republic state, abolishing the country's 240 year old monarchy.

"I hope from today onwards my economic and social condition will improve and we no longer will have to suffer from poverty", said the mother of two children. Tamang, has barely eked out a living by selling vegetables on the street of Ratnapark, Kathmandu for last 5 years.

Like Maina Tamang, the people of Nepal are hopeful for the fulfillment of their needs and desires as they struggle for freedom, peace, good governance, development, justice, equity and inclusiveness in this Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal.

Indeed, Nepal has become an independent, indivisible, secular, inclusive, federal democratic republic with sovereignty and state authority vested in the people. The declaration of Federal Democratic Republican of Nepal by the first meeting of Constitution Assembly on 28th May, 2008 is an historic day in Nepal.

30 year old Nirmal Sunuwar from Sindhuli District celebrated the arrival of the era in the country. “Finally the Shah dynasty has ended and Nepal has entered the Republican phase" said Sunuwar expressing his pleasure and hope that the government will provide employment opportunities to the youth of Nepal.

"The political leaders should work together following the peoples' mandate in order to make this historic day meaningful" Sunuwar added, stating that no ethnic communities or other minorities groups be excluded from the state of new Nepal.

The declaration of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal is the greatest achievement of the Nepalese people but with it comes many challenges for our citizens. Let us move ahead together to built the new Nepal that will ensure the rights of all her people.
