Oldest Man On the Top of The World

Kathmandu, June 9, 2008- “I scaled Mt. Everest for world peace but along with it I achieved immortality too,” said Minbahadur Sherchan (Thakali), the oldest person to summit Mt. Everest.

Speaking at a reception organized by the Senior Citizen Everest Expedition, Nepal (SECEE Nepal), Sherchan described his successful expedition to the summit of Mt. Everest as the success of every Nepalese .

A former British Gurkha from Myagdi District, he became, at age 77, the world’s oldest person to scale the world’s tallest mountain (8,848 metres or 29,029 Feet). He accomplished this feat at 8:40 am on May 25.

After honouring Sherchan with tamrapatra, Minister without Portfolio Sujata Koirala said a person need never be old due to age. “Minbahadur Sherchan proved old age is irrelevant if the person’s will-power is youthful.”

President of Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Pashupati Shamsher JB Rana congratulated Sherchan.

Appreciating and congratulating Sherchan, the President of Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN) Pasang Sherpa said Minbahadur Sherchan has shown new energy to today’s youth.

Jokingly Sherpa said, “It seems this year will be very prosperous for senior people, but I hope Sherchan will not end up in any kind of partition.”
