Nepalese Athletes Dreaming Big in Beijing Olympics![]() The eight Nepalese Olympians at the felicitation program in Kathmandu. Photos: Smita Kathmandu, August 4, 2008- The eight Nepalese Olympians are leaving for the Beijing Olympics today with a dream to win big, or, if not, to break their own national records at the Beijing Olympics which will be held on August 8-24. The athletes and their coaches spent the weekend before leaving for the games attending farewells where people wished them good luck. The Nepal Shooting Association organized a farewell program on Saturday for our eight players who will be participating in the Beijing Olympics 2008. In the program, apart from giving blessing and encouragement to our Olympians, speakers demanded that under the Federal Democratic Republic’s Nepal Constitution there has to be a provision for the development of sports. Druba Bahadur Pradhan, president of Nepal Olympic Committee (NOC) said, “We demand that the makers of New Constitution make sure that there are written provisions for development of sports. If our demands are not met we will declare protest programs.” The President of Newa Force Association, Dipesh Shrestha, announced a prize of Rs.20,000 to all the players and coaches if they break their national record. They also announced cash prizes of Rs.300,000 , 200,000 and 100,000 respectively for the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. Shrestha said they will even present a motorcycle for Phulmaya Kyapchhaki Magar if she breaks the National Record in Olympics. |

In another program on Sunday organized by NPABSON Geeta Rana, the president of the gave a cash prize of Rs. 50,000 to Taekwondo player Deepak Shrestha, and Rs. 25,000 to all other Olympians: Chandrakala Thapa and Arjun Kumar Basnet of athletics, Debu Thapa of Judo, Phulmaya Kyapchhaki Magar of Shooting, Kamal Bahadur Adhilkari of weightlifting and Prasiddha Jung Shah and Karishma Karki of swimming. Coach Puspa Raj Ojha of athletics, Partha Sarathisen Gupta of weightlifting, Birendra Ranjitkar of judo and Pradeep Khati of shooting each received Rs. 5,000 each as pocket money. In giving the prize money, Geeta Rana requested players to compete with energy and from their hearts for the country and the upcoming generation. ![]() Taekwondo player Sangeena Baidhya bids farewell with best wishes to Olympian Deepak Bista Nepal Taekwondo Association (NTA) also organized a farewell program on Sunday for Deepak Bista and his coach Kwon Hyouk Joung. Thanking the organizers for their encouragement and support, Taekwondo player Deepak Bista said, “We appreciate all the support and best wishes from different organizations. We promise that we will give our best in the Olympics for our country and our country peoples’ honor so that our Nepal will be known to the world.” On the same occasion, Partha Sarathisen Gupta, coach of weightlifting said, “These programs are giving us encouragement and the power to dream big.
