National Literature Symposium on
Indigenous Languages by Sangmo Yonjan-Tamang in Kathmandu काठमाडौं, February 19, 2008-National Literature Symposium 2064 (Rastriya Sahitya Sanggosthi 2064) concluded with recitation of poems in several of our nation’s mother tongues. 42 poets writing in 20 different languages that included Limbu, Tamang, Magar, Gurung, Thakali, Kumal, Sunuwar, Majhi, Bantawa-Rai, Chamling-Rai, Umbule-Rai, Baramu, Bhojpuri, Nepal Bhasa, Maithali, Aawadhi, Hyolmo, Urdu, Thami and Dolpo, recited their poetry. ![]() Photo: Sangmo-Yonjan-Tamang The four day Symposium was organized by Nepal Academy from Falgun 4 to 7 (Feb.16 to 19) with the goal of preserving and developing our languages, literature and culture and facilitating the process of social transformation. Participants engaged in lively discussions of language, literature and culture. Speaking at the closing ceremony, Minister of Culture and Civil Aviation and president of National Literature Symposium 2064 co-ordination committee, Prithvi Subba Gurung, said that the symposium succeeded in developing the language, culture and literature of the nation even during our transitional phase. He promised to continue holding literature symposia in future years. Poet Durga Lal Shrestha, chair of this session, stated that while Nepal is a multilingual, multi-cultural and multi-religious country, such practices have not yet been implemented, adding that feeling, not language, is the essence of creating a poem. Hari Har Sharma, Secretary of Nepal Academy thanked everyone who participated. Tamang Participant reciting poem in Symposium Critics Prem Shanti Tuladhar, Krishna Bhusan Bal (Biratnagar), Udhab Krishna Majgaiya (Dhang), Roshan Janakpuri (Janakpur) and Prem Chhota (Baglung) and Bijaya Subba made remarks appreciating and criticizing the program from different view points. In all, 14 presentations were made on topics relating to language, culture and literature. 10 papers discussed “ Situation of different languages such as Gurung, Newar, Limbu, Magar, Tamang, Rai, Maithali, Bhojpuri, Tharu and Aawadhi” presented by Ratna Bahadur Lev Gurung (in Gurung), Prof Narmadeshwor Pradhan (in Newar), Bairagi Kaila and Aamar Tumhang (in Limboo), Lok Bahadur Thapa and Dhan Bahadur Rokka Magar (in Magar), Amrit Yonjan-Tamang (in Tamang), Rajan Mukarung and Bhogi Raj Chamling (in Rai), Dr. Ganga Prasad Aakela (in Maithili), Gopal Thakur and Dinesh Gupta (in Bhojpuri), Mahesh Chaudhari (in Tharu), Biswo Nath Pathak and Bikram Mani Thripathi (in Aawadhi). Other papers included “The Present Situation of Languages of Nepal by Prof. Dr. Madhav Prasad Pokheral, “The Role of Litterateur in Social Transformation” by Dr. Tulsi Battarai and Rishi Raj Baral and two papers on “Question on National Culture’sNature and Policy Making of Nepal” were written by Mod Nath Prasit and Aahuti. Presentations were followed by enthusiastic audience participation. More than 250 participants from the valley and other zones of Nepal attended. Since there have been no academicians at the Nepal Academy due to the dissolution of the governing body following establishment of Loktantra in 2062, this event was organized by Academy staff. They received much praise for their efforts from the appreciative participants. |
