News from New York: News of Tibetans People: Press Releases

Photos & animation by eEyeCam

March 17, 2008

His Excellency Manmohan Singh

Prime Minister of India

C/o Embassy of India
3 East 64th Street
New York, NY 10021
Fax: 212 8613788

Your Excellency,

We the undersigned Tibetan organizations wish to bring to your kind knowledge the current appalling situation in Tibet and appeal your government to allow Tibetans in India to freely exercise their fundamental freedoms in support of the thousands of Tibetan patriots who are sacrificing their lives for the freedom and peace in Tibet.

Starting from 10th March this year, Tibetans all over Tibet, particularly in Lhasa, the capital city of Tibet, have been staging a series of peaceful demonstrations to voice their resentments over the repressive policies of the Chinese government. These protests are being suppressed with brutal violence by the Chinese security forces in which over 100 people are feared to have died, with at least 30 confirmed deaths according to an independent human rights organization.

The latest reports suggest that the entire city of Lhasa is cordoned off and the Chinese security personals are conducting man-hunt to arrest protestors. The People's High Court, Regional People's Procuratorate and the regional Public Security Bureau of the "Tibet Autonomous Region" have issued notices warning "criminals who do not surrender themselves by the deadline will be sternly punished and those who harbor or hide them will also face harsh treatment".

Reports of peaceful demonstrations in several parts of Tibet, including Mangro County in Tsolho Prefecture, Kyegudo Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Ladrang Tashikhiel of Sangchu County in Kanlho Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, and Kardze Prefecture have been received in the last one week. The latest protest occurred Saturday in Ngaba in Amdo Provice were around 400
people took part, including 300 monks from Tad Tsang Lhamo Kyi Monastery.

Due to strict restriction to flow of information outside of Tibet, it is difficult to ascertain the actual severity of the situation. However, we believe that the prevailing conditions in many parts of Tibet are far worse than what we get to hear from these limited sources. It is feared that several hundred Tibetans have been arrested and imprisoned in connection to these peaceful demonstrations.

Given the past ruthless crackdown of peaceful protesters by Chinese authorities, we are deeply concerned and worried about the plight of these imprisoned brethren whose only crime was exercising their fundamental rights to freedom of speech and opinion.

Tibetans all over the world have been staging protests in support of our brethrens in Tibet. They urgently need the support and solidarity of the international community without which Chinese authorities will once again succeed in silencing the voices of freedom and justice.

We, therefore, earnestly request your government to release the 100 Tibetan peace marchers who are currently being detained by local authorities and allow them to resume the "Return March to Tibet".

With our highest regards,
