of Nepal in America (FIPNA) will have an informal meeting with Dr.
Mahabir Pun at its office from 12 noon to 3 PM on Sunday as well.

The social pioneer talks about his innovative strategies and about the future of Nepal. This program will be conducted in Nepali. Mahabir Pun has has been recognized by the Ashoka Foundation as one of the people from around the globe who have "innovative solutions to social problems and the potential to change patterns across society". He first dreamed of connecting his village of Nangi to the internet in 1997, and has been working ever since to bring the internet to rural Nepal. Mahabir was born in Nangi, and completed his primary education there. After working as a teacher for several years, he completed a master's degree in education at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. On Tuesday, July 31, 2007, the Board of Trustees of the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation (RMAF), Phillipines, announced Pun as the recipient. This coveted award is viewed as the Asian equivalent of the Nobel Prize. Other nominees were three Chinese, a Korean, an Indian and a Philipino. Mr. Pun was cited for community leadership, for "his innovative application of wireless computer technology in Nepal, [and for] bringing progress to remote mountain areas by connecting his village to the global village." (Read full Citation) He will be presented with the prestigious award in Manila, Philippines, on August 31. Mr. Pun is the 4th Nepali citizen to win the prestigious award. Dr. Sanduk Ruit, head of the Tilganga Eye Center in Kathmandu, Nepal received the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2006 for "placing Nepal at the forefront of developing safe, effective and economic procedures for cataract surgery, enabling the needlessly blind in even the poorest countries to see again." Eminent journalist, Bharat Dutta Koirala, received the award in 2002 for "developing professional journalism in Nepal and unleashing the democratizing powers of a free media."(Read full Citation) and Mahesh Chandra Regmi was the first Nepali to receive the award in 1977 "for chronicling of Nepal's past and present, enabling his people to discover their origins and delineating national options." (Read full Citation) Established in 1957 in memory of Ramon Del Fierro Magsaysay (1907-1957), the third president of the Republic of the Philippines after World War II who was recognized for his selfless service to his people and country after his death in a tragic plane crash along with 25 others, including members of his government, and the reporters from the media.
