Demand for Tamuwan Autonomous State

Kathmandu, December 30, 2008- Indigenous Gurung (Tamu) community celebrated their biggest festival Tola Lhosar, the New Year, demanding Tamuwan Autonomous State with Right to Self- Determination in various part of the country including Kathmandu valley with great gust and merriment.

Hundreds of Gurung community members from all walks of life residing in Kathmandu gathered at Tudikhel ground, the main venue of the event on December 30 (Poush 15) to mark the festival exchanging best wishes and warm greeting, which they call 'Lhosar Aasimala' among friends, families and relatives.

Bidding goodbye to Mouse Year, and welcoming Cow Year, enthusiastic Tamu peoples clad in their traditional attires, engaged themselves in dancing, singing, playing while others in feasting.

Different Indigenous groups like Gurung, Tamang and Sherpa celebrate Lhosar on different dates. Tamang and Yholmo peoples mark Sonam Lhochhar in the month of Magh (February), and Sherpa and other Mountain peoples celebrate Gyalpo Lhochhar in Falgun (March). Gurung observed it always on Poush 15. In every three years, Tamang and Sherpa mark Lhosar in same date.

Gurung Communtiy considers this day as the beginning of short night and a long day.

"I feel so happy to have such a wonderful celebration," said 6 grader student Priya Gurung. " It’s a good time to know about our culture and tradition which the new generation are unaware of." She added.

Young Gurung girls and boys found it a right occasion to get to know each other in an appropriate manner and more in privacy.

Old aged peoples too were enjoying the celebration of Lhosar, as they believe such celebration helps in promoting and preserving the culture that has been carrying from ancient period.

" Lhosar is our identity of culture that we have been observing for many decades." 61 years old Khrishna Kumari Gurung, residence of Sundhara, hailing from Pokhara said. She stated that despites of her unhealthy condition, she came here to observe the auspicious occasion of Lhosar that comes once in a year.

Huge participants were seen including non- Gerunds as the day is declared public holiday and recognized as a national festival by the government, formally from this year.
The celebration consisted of display of cultural dress, singing Dohari songs and playing traditional instruments, which were indeed noteworthy. They performed their native dance with an unparallel enthusiasm. Tamu women decorated themselves with jewelries such as Piru, Pote, Maruli, Tirauli, Naugeri, Mar Chura whereas male clad in Bhinduphagi, Bhangra.

Several dozens of flavorsome food stalls served them range varieties of delicious dishes and traditional liquors.

Prominent figures of Gurung community like Minister for Forest and Soil conservation Kiran Gurung, Minister for Law, Justice, and Constituent Assembly Dev Prasad Gurung, Inspector General of Police Hem Bahadur Gurung and other Gurung CA members were also presented on the occasion.

Addressing the function, Chief guest for the program Minister of Law, Justice and Constitution Dev Gurung stated the celebration of Lhosar in this grand way has build the foundation for making New Nepal.

"I wish Tamu peoples to get success in sketching the framework of Tamuwan state in this Cow Year. Then only the Democracy would be institutionalized." Said Minister Gurung urging all Gurung peoples to provide help in constitution making process that ensure their rights.

Forest and Soil Conservation Minister Kiran Gurung called Gurung community to be united to achieve the rights and ownership that Gurung have been lost from the past.

" We are not snatching anybody's right but demanding our own rights. Indigenous Peoples are the owner of the nation, they have the right to get their own state." Said Minister Gurung adding, " there are some elements which are against federalism, however, we should end those wrong concept and step ahead to achieve Tamuwan Autonomous State."

He further said the institutionalization of Democratic Republican is impossible without getting rights and the fulfillment of demands.

Tamu Mukti Morcha's R.B. Tamu, Tamu Women Association's Chairperson Chandra Kala Gurung, K.B Gurung and other speakers demanded the Tamuwan Autonomous State and emphasized to have a unity among different Tamu organizations to achieve the rights and constitution to be written in stipulated time.

The Lhosar good wishes message from Prime Minister Prachanda was read on the occasion as he was unable to attend the function due to busy scheduled.

The formal program included the felicitation of members of Gurung Community who have made special contribution to the society and launching of VCDs and cassettes of the Gurung singers.

The celebration commenced with a cultural rally taken from Basantapur Darbar Square that went through Bhotahiti, Jamal, Ratnapark , Shahidgate and converged at Tudhekhel ground where the culture and entertainment feast kicked off.

There was the participation of several dozens Gurung organizations.

The event was hosted by Tamu Lhosar Main Organizer Committee. This time the event was jointly organized by various Gurung organizations.
