New York, November 13, 2008- In New York City, where we run our news portal, we often have the opportunity to meet exceptional Nepalese women from all walks of life. Some are working tirelessly back home in Nepal to improve the lives of Nepalese people whereas some work here quietly as they make a significant impact on the lives of Nepalese immigrants. One thing these Nepalese women have in common is that they work for the betterment of Nepalese women, and in doing so make the rest of us proud. They inspire us to follow in their footsteps be inspired.

Nepalese women have come a long way from being a housewives to winning elections to the House of Parliament. Nepal’s current 601-member Constituent Assembly has 197, or 32.77 per cent women members. The United States, known as the country of greatest freedom & democracy, has only 16 percent women in the Senate and the House of Representatives combined.

Our own New Yorker, Luna Ranjit, co-founder & now Executive Director of Adhikaar, is one of the women we are proud of as representing the power of Nepalese womanhood. She and her colleagues at Adhikaar, run this New York City based, Nepalese women-led non profit organization. Adhikaar's most recent success can be measured by a New York City award it won this year. Called the "Union Square Award", it is accompanied by a $50,000 grant for organizations making exceptional efforts to address critical social issues facing New Yorkers.

This week, we are having another proud moment as we welcome women’s rights activist, lawyer and Constituent Assembly Member Sapana Pradhan Malla who is here to receive the Gruber Women' Rights Prize award from the Gruber Foundation.

This Women's Rights Prize honors those individuals who have made significant contributions to advancing the rights of women and girls around the world. The award comes with a gold medal and an unrestricted cash award of $500,000 that honors courageous efforts to achieve gender equality. Sapana will share this year's award with Yanar Mohammed, Co-founder of the Organization of Women’s Freedom in Iraq, and Dr. Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian, a leading Palestenian feminist scholar, therapist and activist.

$166,666.66 or approximately 1 crore 30 lakhs Nepalese rupees will go to Sapana. She surprised me by saying that she is going to spend more than half of this money on building shelters for destitute Nepalese women outside of Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. That's a saintly thought indeed!

During Bhai Tika (Tihar), I met with Saloni Singh of Didi Bahini, the highly reputed Nepalese women’s NGO based in Kathmandu. She was here to participate as a panelist in the 8th meeting of the UN Security Council’s Resolution 1325 which deals with the impact of war on women, and women's contributions to conflict resolution and sustainable peace. She also presented an important paper on "Emerging Role of Women in Decision Making and implementation of UNSCR # 1325: Innovative Interventions in Nepal" to the international audience which was organized jointly by the UNDP (United Nations Development Program) & the UN Department of Political Affairs.

We had another high time for women during Tihar with Unnati Bohara “Sheela”, the multi-talented Nepalese woman who was here to release her 4 music albums: “Aashakti”, Yo Shilshila”, “Pheri Yek Palta” and “Mero Mayalai”. Her novel “Two Faces of A Coin” was also released. She is a singer, lyricist, poetess and novelist.

In September, Indira Ranamagar of Prisoners Assistance Nepal was here. She is the winner of Ashoka: Innovators for the Public Award 2005 for her work in prisons and with families of prisoners. In 2007, she was recognised as one of Asia’s 21 Young Leaders by the Asia Society. She described the work she performs in rescuing and caring for children of the families of prisoners in Nepal. While she was here she was invited to talk to the U.S. Justice Department in Washington , D.C. about her methods of sheltering and rehabilitating the children.

She has been escorting Bhutanese refugees from Jhapa, Nepal to the US in the service of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to fulfill the US government’s commitment to absorb 60 thousand Bhutanese families.

In New York, there are many Nepalese women working in international sectors. Some of the unsung heroes are: Bharati Silawal-Giri, Gender and Development Advisor at the UNDP whose expertise in gender equality and development can be an asset for Nepal. Another name to be proud of is Rekha Thapa who is the Director, Executive Board Secretariat and Secretary, UNDP / UNFPA Executive Board in New York.

Kiran Chetry. Photo: eEyeCam

We can take great pride when we wake up early in the morning and see TV Anchor Kiran Chetry reading the 6 a.m. E.T. weekday news on CNN’s ‘American Morning’ with John Roberts. Kiran was born in Shanta Bhawan Hospital in Kathmandu. Her father is Nepali and mother is Ukrainian.

That’s it for now. Keep checking our future feature stories of these and other Nepalese women who are making New York their home or work place, or come as frequent visitors as their work brings them here.

So hey, why wait any longer to celebrate Nepalese womanhood right here in New York City, the capital city of the world?
