Janajatis Demand Equal Opportunity & Recognition Sangmo Tamang in Kathmandu Kathmandu, January 17, 2008- Indigenous leaders have urged the government and major political parties to clarify their views on representation and roles of indigenous nationalities in the approaching constitution assembly polls. Those views have not yet been clearly stated. ![]() Guests at the NFDIN's 5th Governing Council Meeting. They said if there is participation of janajatis without their representation in CA Polls for the formation of new Nepal, such participation would be meaningless. Speaking at a function organized by National Foundation for Development of Indigenous Nationalities(NFDIN) to mark its fifth governing council meeting in Kathmandu, they demanded that the government recognize the nation’s cultural diversity in establishing it’s system of rule. ![]() President of NEFIN, Pasang Sherpa. Pasang Sherpa, President of Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities, said the state has no clearly articulated view regarding janajatis’ representation in the CA Polls. “Government and political parties urge janajatis to successfully conduct CA Polls, but in the process of making new Nepal they might make us (janajatis) powerless or without any official role. Thus it is necessary to make public their precise views on janajatis issues.” He urged the government to be honest about janajatis issues stating “we have been deceived by the state time and again in terms of implementation of agreements reached in the past. Now we are wary of any false statements.” ![]() Vice chairman of NFDIN, Jit Pal Kirat. Vice-chairperson (NFDIN), Jit Pal Kirat claimed the establishment of a federal democratic republic would solve age-old problems faced by janajatis. “Despite having a limited budget we have been able to utilize it in a proper manner” he added demanding a proper allocation of budget and management of resources for indigenous nationalists. Inaugurating the two-day function, Co-chairperson of NFDIN and Minister for local development Dev Gurung said federal state structure with right to self determination is the only solution to end imperialism and feudalism. He stressed the need for restructuring the nation to give special rights and provisions to endangered indigenous groups. Human rights activist Padma Ratna Tuladhar said that even after the restoration of loktantra (democracy), janajatis have been the victims of discrimination. He accused the century-long unitary state structure for not recognizing the cultural diversity of the nation. ![]() National Anthem lyricist Byakul Maila being felicitated by Local Development Minister Dev Gurung. Photos: Sangmo Tamang In the programme, NFDIN felicitated various indigenous personalities who have contributed in their respective fields. They were Magasaysay award winners Dr. Sanduk Ruit and Dr. Mahabir Pun Magar, senior musician Amber Gurung and national anthem composer Byakul Maila. Several ethnic groups staged a protest in front of Birendra International Convention Centre (BICC), the programme venue, demanding that their groups be included by the government in the list of 59 ethnic groups. |
