'Indigenous Languages of the world are not dying but killing by the power languages' -Dr. Tove Skutnabb-Kangas, Finland

काठमाडौं, February 2, 2008 -Various indigenous personalities have stressed on the need of mother tongue education in order to develop children's intellectual capacity.

Speaking on a seminar on "Sharing Multilingual Education in Nepal" which was organized by National Foundation for Development of Indigenous Nationalities (NFDIN), Lok Bahadur Thapa-Magar, Member-secretary of (NFDIN) and chairperson of the seminar said- "all the indigenous communities ought to be aware to preserve and develop their mother tongue stating that the preservation of the languages along with its historical land is important. Without the historical land, the preservation of indigenous culture, language and tradition would be impossible."

Chief guest of the programme and Minister for Local Development, Dev Gurung said- "Due to 240 years long state's policy of one language and one culture, many languages have been disappeared". He assured that the government would implement the multilingual education programme in an appropriate manner in the formation of ‘new Nepal’.

Chief Technical Adviser of Multilingual Education Programme, Dr. David Hough said that every children have the right to get education in their mother tongue and stressed that the contents should be their culture, and history.

Dr. Tove Skutnabb-Kangas, Findland

During the programme, Dr. Tove Skutnabb-Kangas from Finland presented one hour long Power Point presentation on linguistics human rights. She said- "Indigenous language are not dying but killing by the power languages." She has also expressed that mother tongue educations is the foundation of the child to learn other languages.

Dr. Mere Kepa had presented paper on 'Research for and by Maori’. She belongs to Maori peoples in New Zealand. She expressed that how they are ruled by the British ignoring the agreement signed between the indigenous people and the crown.
