Hunger Free Art for Nepalese Poor
Children Kathmandu, August 7, 2008- The Heart Beat, a part of the Youth Action Nepal and Child Development Youth Network, in collaboration with Action Aid Nepal organizes children art workshop and competition involving 20 Children from poor and excluded communities on the occasion of “International Youth Day-2008”. The workshop will be held at the National Association of Fine Art Gallery (NAFA), Naxal, Kathmandu. The major objective of this program is to involve young people and make them aware of hunger and food crisis issues through creative arts. The sad fact is that approximately 17 per cent of global populations are hungry in this world of plenty. Every five seconds 1 child dies from hunger and malnutrition. In Nepal, 44 districts have a food deficit. Women and children are the hardest hit. The recent food crisis intensified the hardship and vulnerability of poor and excluded people. Despite Nepal’s signing of the UN’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the state has failed to halve the hunger and extreme poverty as it committed to do. Against this background, Heart Beat along with like minded youth organizations have initiated Hunger-FREE campaign since 2007. As a part of the International Youth Day celebration, Heart Beat is organizing a hunger art workshop and competition involving 10 students from Prisoner Assistance Nepal and 10 from squatter and slum dweller communities. Prior to competition, an orientation on hunger, its causes and a basic introduction of campaigns to eliminate it are given so participants can capture the theme as best as they can. The jury consists of Gopal Kala Premi, Saroj Bajracharya and Satya Sila Kasajoo. The winners will receive awards during the closing ceremony of International Youth Day on August 12, and their creations will be displayed during the mass rally and later through public exhibition. Heart Beat, Youth Action Nepal, Child Development Youth Network cordially requests your presence and solidarity for this noble cause. Please don't forget to demonstrate your online action on www.actionaid.org/hungerfree -Juju Kaji Maharjan, Heart Beat, Program Coordinator/HungerFREE campaigner |
