Domestic Workers of New York Seen in

New York, December 7, 2008- To celebrate International Human Rights Day, children raised by nannies and children of nannies held hands to join in demonstrating for the rights of nannies and of all domestic workers. The program called "Children's Vigil- for the Human Rights of Domestic Workers" organized this morning at New York City, City Hall. Dozens of these children and their families are calling on New York State to pass the 'Domestic Workers Bill of Rights', which would place domestic workers on an equal footing with other employees and provide urgently needed protection. At the program, seven years old Niah (daughter of a nanny) said "I want my mummy to work like everyone else so we can have times together and I can have nice things." And Julia, a young woman raised by a domestic worker (Joanie) said “She is my first memory. She taught me, she accepted me and if I had not known her, if she had not supplied those things, I don't know what I'd be now, or who. I have so much of myself I owe to her. I support the domestic workers bill of rights to ensure some kind of justice for the people who are caring for the young, old and disabled of this city but still can not afford to provide for their own family members in the same way." |

Similarly, many people including other children of domestic workers and children raised by domestic workers talked about the value of domestic work and the struggles domestic workers endure. Joyce, the program organizer with DWU, urged all to attend the Domestic Workers Justice Coalition for the First Lobby day of the 2009 New York State Legislative session on February 10th, 2009. Today’s rally was organized & supported by the Domestic Workers United (DWU), Jews for Racial and Economic Justice (JFREJ), Regeneration, and other partners in the Domestic Workers Justice Coalition with active participation by dozens of other organizations including ADHIKAAR, the Nepalese women-led New York City based organization. Domestic Workers' Bill of Rights includes sick days, vacation days, one day of rest per week, health insurance coverage, notice of termination and severance pay. -Amit P. Shah in New York.
