Kathmandu, June 6, 2008- Indigenous Peoples across the world are recognized as those who have contributed significantly as custodians of nature in preserving the environment. They have contributed greatly by maintaining the livelihoods of millions of the world’s people.
They are rich in culture, tradition, language and other forms of diversity.

For those who wish to learn about the culture, tradition and lifestyles of Indigenous Peoples, here is a great opportunity to do so: The Indigenous Film Archive (IFA) is organizing the 2nd International Indigenous Film Festival 2008 from June 6 to 9, 2008 with an objective to protect, promote and revitalize the culture of Indigenous Peoples. The films will be screened at Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and City Hall (CH), Bhrikutimandap, Kathmandu.

Indigenous films from Asia, Europe, Australia and Canada will be screened.

The Archive is organizing this 2nd International Indigenous Film Festival because of the encouragement from the huge enthusiastic audience last year. The films screened last year were influential nationally and internationally.
Cripa based on Gurung culture, Brohan (Tharu), A life with slat (Thami) succeeded in getting placed in International festivals of Netherland and Canada.

This time 23 films from 11 ethnic communities in Nepal and 28 films and documentaries from 11 international communities will be screened. Fictional, Documentary, Animation and music video are included.

"To create cultural identity, the preservation and revitalization of the culture is necessary." says Nabin Subba, Chairperson of IFA. Stating that the festival will be helpful in understanding the culture, language, tradition and social relations of each other, he added, " more importantly, it will help to maintain cultural tolerance and end cultural conflicts that may exist between Indigenous Nationalities."

"The festival will increase awareness of the younger generation of the importance of their culture and language that they have been ignoring in the name of modernization."

Twenty- eight international films and documentaries to be screened in the festival are from India, China, Canada, America, Mexico, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Australia and New Zealand.

Indigenous films of Nepal in Magar, Tamang, Tharu, Newar, Gurung, Limbu, Sherpa, Rajbanshi, Majhi, Chepang, Loba are competing to win the prize of four different categories. The best four films will be awarded on the basis of audience voting and critic's judgment.

Another attraction of the festival is the exhibition of Indigenous handicrafts, cultural books, filmy CDs and Indigenous Food Festival.
