The UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) is an advisory UN body to the Economic and Social Council, with a mandate to discuss indigenous issues related to economic and social development, culture, the environment, education, health and human rights. It is hosting its Eighth Session between 18-29 May, 2009 at UN Headquarters in New York.

Our Editor-in-Chief Pradeep Thapa & Contributors Pasang Yangjee Sherpa & Jayanti Rai will be reporting from the meeting venue at UN Headquarters in New York.

New York, May 20, 09- More than 2 thousand Indigenous representatives from several countries are meeting at the United Nations Headquarters in New York for the Eighth Session (May 18-29) of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) to voice their issues and concerns that impact their cultural survival and livelihood sustenance. New York, April 22, 2008-The 10-day seventh session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) began here yesterday in UN Headquarters in New York City, convened under the theme “Climate change, bio-cultural diversity and livelihoods: the stewardship role of indigenous peoples and new challenges.”

There were an unprecedented 3,300 vibrant and colourful Indigenous People attending from around the world. The organizers of this session were more jubilant than ever as they were hosting this session for the first time since the United Nations General Assembly finally adopted the landmark United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, September 13, 2007.  (04/22/2008).
